BROOKSVILLE

Portion of street named for Ali

The Brooksville City Council this week approved a scaled-back plan to rename a street after the late boxing champion and activist Muhammad Ali.

Edna Willis, a longtime resident of Union Street, which was slated for the new name, voiced concern about the challenge and expense of changing addresses.

Council member Frankie Burnett, who floated the idea of the name change, suggested that removing all of the residential addresses from the change would help people living there. So he proposed that the only portion that should be renamed Muhammad Ali Way should be the segment between E Jefferson Street and Dr. M.L. King Jr. Boulevard.

The council agreed, voting 4-1, with Mayor Natalie Kahler opposed.
