St. Petersburg continues to tweak Pier District budget

ST. PETERSBURG — The City Council has agreed to amend its deal with the architects of the over-water portion of the Pier project. The amendment adds $120,000 to the $4.4 million contract.

City architect Raul Quintana told council members the change was necessary because the architects, ASD of Tampa and Rogers Partners Architects of New York, must redesign the section adjoining the $20 million pier approach.

The $46 million pier portion of the project being designed by ASD and Rogers Partners was conceived before the $20 million approach. Quintana said the redesign would ensure that the combined Pier District would be seamless.

The redesigned area, initially envisioned as a welcome plaza with a transportation hub, will now include a $1.2 million, 13,000-square-foot pavilion with restrooms and snack bar plus a play zone and splash pad.

The approach stretches from Beach Drive to Spa Beach and is being designed by W Architecture and Landscape Architecture of New York and St. Petersburg's Wannemacher Jensen.

Quintana told the council the amended agreement will not increase the $66 million Pier District budget and that the additional cost will be covered by contingency funds.

City Council member Karl Nurse said council members have been "fairly clear" that they do not want to exceed the $66 million budget.
