St. Petersburg mayor meets with Sweetbay officials about Midtown store

ST. PETERSBURG — In an effort to prevent the Sweetbay Supermarket from closing in Midtown, Mayor Bill Foster met late Tuesday with store officials in Gainesville.

Foster requested the meeting last week after holding a news conference with other elected officials to stress how vital the store is to the redevelopment Midtown neighborhood.

Foster declined to comment late Tuesday. To attend the meeting, Foster had to leave a Pinellas County Commission meeting early that featured a presentation by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Larry Newsome of Urban Development Solutions, the shopping center's landlord, also attended the meeting. He declined to comment while traveling.

Sweetbay announced plans to close 33 stores, including 22 in the Tampa Bay area. The store in Tangerine Plaza will close Feb. 13. But it will likely go dark sooner since meat and produce isn't being replenished on shelves.
