Zephyrhills drops 'interim' from fire chief's title

ZEPHYRHILLS – City Council members unanimously approved City Manager Jim Drumm's choice of Verne Riggall as the city's next fire chief at Monday's meeting.

Riggall has been serving as interim fire chief since October, following the resignation of Keith Williams, who left in September to take a leadership position with Sumter County Fire Rescue.

Drumm created a five-person committee to interview and rank the top five candidates from a field of 16 applicants, only six of whom met the minimum requirements, he said. Riggall was ranked first by the group, Drumm said.

Riggall, a former fire chief in High Springs and a deputy fire chief in Charlotte County, will earn about $66,000 annually.
