Man killed during robbery near Mango

A 52-year-old man was shot and killed late Friday during an apparent robbery, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.

Shelby Jones was in a shed with his brother at his home on Old Hillsborough Avenue E, just east of Interstate 75 when, he told deputies, a gunman whose face was concealed with a bandana entered to rob them at 11:20 p.m.

Jones' brother, who is not identified by deputies, was knocked in the head with the gun, deputies said. Jones "reacted by making an inadvertent movement," investigators said.

The gunman then shot Jones in the upper body, killing him, the brother told deputies.

No other details are available and the case is still under investigation. Investigators said the recording of the 911 call would not be released to media, as is often done in such cases.

Crime scene technicians and deputies were still at the scene 12 hours after the shooting.
