Metropolitan Ministries helps families in need during annual holiday food drive in Tampa

Metropolitan Ministries kicked off its annual holiday drive Friday morning by collecting food donations for families in need in the Tampa Bay area.

The Tampa-based nonprofit organization collected thousands of pounds of turkey, along with other seasonal foods, during its food drive at WestShore Plaza in Tampa.

GENERX Generators, based in Oldsmar, donated two tons of turkeys, doubling Metropolitan Ministries' annual turkey donation.

In addition, the organization collected several barrels of canned goods and other food.

The event is part of an effort to assist more than 18,000 families during the holiday season, according to the organization's website.
