Military news for Pinellas County

The following military personnel graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Army Pfc. Kristina M. Rodriguez, granddaughter of Pauletta Allen of Milan, Mich., and niece of Randy Allen of Clearwater, is a 2011 graduate of Milan High, Mich.

Army Pvt. Ronald M. Howell, son of Joanne Howell of Clearwater, is a 2000 graduate of Clearwater High.

During nine weeks of training, the soldiers studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, and physical fitness. They also received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Kaley N. Barton, daughter of Debbie A. and Brian K. Barton of Clearwater, was promoted to her current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Barton received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis also was placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations," an exercise that gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.

Barton is a 2010 graduate of Clearwater High.
