South Pinellas military graduations, promotions

Jonathan M. Gutierrez recently graduated from the Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer Course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Gutierrez is a 2006 graduate of Seminole High School.

Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Jerry A. Renfroe, brother of Mary A. Renfroe of St. Petersburg, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J. Renfroe is a 2010 graduate of Coral Shores High School of Tavernier.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Scott P. Loyden, son of Susan E. and Shawn P. Loyden of St. Petersburg, was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Loyden received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle. Training included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. Loyden is a 2010 graduate of St. Petersburg High School.

    SEMINOLE — Environmental experts, always concerned about the water quality of Lake Seminole, are assessing how much Hurricane Irma may have stirred up the nearly 1 million cubic yards of muck that lay on the bottom.

    Despite the expenditure of more than $30 million over nearly two decades, improved water quality in Lake Seminole remains elusive. The muck that lines the bottom of the 684-acre freshwater lake keeps accumulating while the cost to remove it keeps rising.
