PALM HARBOR — Is it merely coincidence that managers of the Muvico Palm Harbor theater decided to have a DJ spinning music near the ticket window tonight, while about 5 miles south on U.S. 19, Cobb Countryside 12 is celebrating its grand opening?

Ryan Carson, managing director for the 16-year-old Muvico at 37912 U.S. 19 N, said the musical entertainment has more to do with enticing the public to come check out completed renovations at his theater.

However, Carson acknowledged that although the improvements would have happened one way or the other, the opening of the Cobb Countryside 12 today at Westfield Countryside Mall "might have gotten the work all done a little faster.''

Carpet and floor coverings have been replaced at the Palm Harbor theater, which also has new signage.

And the Muvico has updated all of the movie projectors from film to digital. "They are Sony 4K digital projectors with Dolby stereo sound, and so now the sight and sound is top notch in all theaters,'' Carson said.

Additionally, D-box motion seats — a feature also touted at the new Cobb theater — have been added to one of the Muvico auditoriums.

"The viewer will basically have seats move along with the movie,'' said Carson. "You're feeling what is going on in the screen."

The DJ will begin playing music at the Muvico theater at 7 p.m. today, and a balloon artist will be giving away free balloons to kids.

And for those who are curious, the first movie to play in Auditorium 3, the one with the motion seats, is Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Showtimes are 12:15 p.m., 3:50 p.m., 7 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.
