Climate talkathon

The Senate headed into another all-nighter Monday evening as 26 Democrats who call themselves the "climate caucus" planned to speak nonstop about climate change from about 6:30 p.m. until 9 a.m. today. Two independents planned to join them. The talkathon is the latest bid by the group, which is working in concert with a House caucus, to elevate the issue of global warming.

A heart doctor and Ivy League university president who also plays the saxophone and flute was named the next leader of the Smithsonian Institution on Monday. Cornell University president David Skorton, 64, will combine his love of the arts and sciences at the world's largest museum and research complex. He will replace Secretary Wayne Clough, who retires at the end of the year.

Ted Turner surgery

Media mogul Ted Turner said Monday that he was bouncing back from surgery and was looking forward to getting back to business as usual. Turner, 75, was hospitalized in Argentina last week for appendicitis.
