Republican donor gets probation

The conservative author and documentary filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza was spared prison time Tuesday after pleading guilty this year to violating federal campaign finance laws by using straw donors to contribute to a Republican Senate candidate in New York in 2012. U.S. District Court Judge Richard Berman handed down a probationary sentence — including eight months in a so-called community confinement center — and a $30,000 fine. D'Souza, who was behind a high-grossing film condemning President Barack Obama, initially said he had been singled out for prosecution because of his politics.

D.C. concedes on concealed weapons

A reluctant District of Columbia Council voted unanimously Tuesday to allow people to carry concealed handguns in the nation's capital for the first time in nearly 40 years. The bill was crafted to comply with a court ruling that struck down the district's ban on carrying handguns outside the home. Residents and visitors who want to carry a concealed handgun would have to show a specific reason that they need one, among other requirements. But the attorney who challenged the ban on carrying guns has said the legislation does not comply with the court ruling.
