Hunt for escaped murderers is redirected again

DNA matching that of two escaped killers was found in a cabin in the remote resort of Mountain View, N.Y., 15 heavily wooded miles west of the state prison in Dannemora, an official briefed on the investigation said Monday. The forensic evidence indicated that the men had been there within the previous 48 hours, according to the official. A pair of prison-issued underwear was also found in the cabin. At a news conference, Maj. Charles E. Guess of the New York State Police said investigators thought the escapees, Richard W. Matt and David Sweat, "may have spent time in a cabin in this area." The discovery was the latest turn in the hunt for Matt and Sweat on Day 17 of their escape, and shifted its focus back to the region around Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, after a weekend of searches more than 300 miles away. A man who went to check on his cabin in Mountain View on Saturday found a jug of water and a jar of peanut butter on the table and saw a man run out the back door.

Governor has 'very advanced' cancer

Gov. Larry Hogan has "very advanced" and "very aggressive" cancer of the lymph nodes, but he said Monday he will continue to work as Maryland's governor. Hogan said the cancer is B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He says it may be Stage 4, or at least a very advanced Stage 3. He spoke at a hastily organized news conference in Annapolis, surrounded by members of his family and cabinet. Hogan, 59, a Republican who took office in January, says he's "shocked" by the news. He said he had noticed a painless lump along his jaw this month. He also felt some back pain, which, he said, was caused by a tumor pressing on his spine. Hogan said he will miss some meetings while undergoing chemotherapy, but won't stop working, like others who undergo cancer treatment and stay on their jobs.

Dad kills family on Father's Day: police

A Roy man apparently shot and killed his wife and two young children before shooting himself on Father's Day, stunning neighbors on their suburban street who described him as a happy, doting father. Officers discovered the bodies Sunday night: Russell Smith, 29; his wife, Shawna Smith, 26; and their children, daughter Tylee, 6, and son Blake, 2. It appeared Russell Smith shot himself and the others, and investigators were not looking for any suspects. "Sweetest little family you ever saw. I can't imagine," next-door neighbor LaRue Simpson said.

Arias has to pay up in restitution costs

A judge ordered convicted murderer Jodi Arias on Monday to pay about $30,000 in restitution to the victim's family. Judge Sherry Stephens told Arias to pay relatives of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander for trial expenses such as travel and lodging. Alexander's family asked for about $100,000 in restitution, but Arias' attorney, Jennifer Willmott, says they didn't get the full amount because they didn't turn in the necessary receipts. Arias likely won't make enough money in prison to pay the family.
