Newtown students start school year

Therapy dogs and heightened security greeted Sandy Hook Elementary School students Tuesday as they began their first full year of school without the 20 children and six educators slain in the December massacre in Newtown, Conn. The students are again being bused to the neighboring town of Monroe. "Things went well," said Brenda Lebinski, whose 9-year-old daughter is starting fourth grade. "There was a lot of police presence when we pulled in. There were lots of teachers and therapy dogs greeting the kids when they walked in."

Scientists say new element confirmed

Scientists in Sweden said Tuesday that they had confirmed the existence of a new chemical element, but its name may need some work. Researchers at Lund University back claims by teams in Russia and the United States a decade ago that had remained unverified until now for the super-heavy element dubbed ununpentium. The name, which refers to the element's 115th place in the periodic table, is only provisional.
