Northern lights may expand south
Northerners thawing out from a bitter freeze may get rewarded with shimmering northern lights the next couple days. Federal space weather forecaster Joe Kunches said the sun shot out a strong solar flare late Tuesday, which should arrive at Earth early today. It should shake up Earth's magnetic field and expand the Aurora Borealis south, possibly as far south as Colorado and central Illinois. He said best viewing would probably be this evening, weather permitting.
Mediterranean diet improves health
Even without weight loss, adhering to a diet rich in fresh produce, chicken, fish and olive oil is 40 percent more effective in heading off the development of Type 2 diabetes than following a low-fat diet, a new study has found. The research suggests that for the nation's 78 million obese adults, a diet that minimizes red meat and sweets but incorporates plant-based fats may be a sustainable way to improve health. The findings add to mounting research that suggests a traditional Mediterranean diet may be easier to adhere to and more likely to improve health than more restrictive regimens.
Meditation can help manage pain
Mindfulness meditation can help ease anxiety, depression and pain, but scientists found little evidence that meditation helped other conditions including substance abuse or sleep and attention problems. The scientists, reporting Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine, noted that many Americans had turned to mindfulness or transcendental meditation to improve their lives and to cope with medical and other problems. But there's little clarity, they said, among health care providers about the value of these alternatives to standard medical care.
