Obama came out ahead in cookie race, too

LARGO

The official results are in, and once again, Frida Alipour's cookies cooked up the winner of a presidential race.

From Sept. 7 through Nov. 6, Frida's Cafe and Bakery at 9700 Ulmerton Road offered customers the option of buying cookies topped with edible photos of President Barack Obama or Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Frida's called it the "Presidential Cookie Poll."

The final tally: Out of 5,273 sold, 2,807 were Obama cookies and 2,466 were Romney cookies.

That works out to 53 percent for the president and 47 percent for the contender.

There were days when Obama cookie sales would move ahead. Other days, Romney's numbers would rise, said Alipour, owner of the bakery.

"After the first debate, Romney really did see an uptick in sales,'' Alipour recalled.

Her staff made sure to post updated numbers on the cookie sales on the digital sign outside the business. However, there were times when customers driving by would take the stats a little too seriously.

"There was one woman who called a few times and she was yelling at us," Alipour said. "She said she saw the sign as she drove by and she couldn't believe we were saying Obama was winning the election. We told her, 'ma'am, this is about our cookies, not the real election.' ''

Because of that type of reaction however, Alipour has developed a mantra.

"We are a bipartisan bakery,'' she joked.
