On to the next step of family's journey with hope
Friday, September 9, 2011
Last Sunday, we packed up our minivan with suitcases full of clothes, diapers, toys and other essentials for our family's seven-hour drive to Atlanta. It felt like the exciting ascent that people experience when they make "Aliyah" to Israel — toward a life not about materialism, but rather, about spirituality and growth.
I was born in the Tampa Bay area. My husband and I went to schools in Pinellas County, left for college and came back home. It is a wonderful place to grow up, surrounded by beautiful beaches and many friendly people. Much of our family is here, and it is difficult to leave them, but it's not too far away for visits.

John and Pam Hughes had walked 6 miles along the Dunedin Causeway by the time he finished telling her about his past, much of it not very pretty. It was early in their relationship, and he had planned to wait longer before revealing the details — his sex and Internet porn addictions, his two failed marriages.
But he had completely turned his life around through Celebrate Recovery — an international 12-step program based on the Bible and Christian principles — and was ready to move on.

HOLIDAY — Mike Doughty and his crew of volunteers hustle around the church kitchen and into the sanctuary, serving up hot breakfasts to the dozens who have gathered there Sunday morning.

Dozens of people of all ages sit in the back of the sanctuary at round tables with white cloths, enjoying hot food and friendly service — all part of the Mission Cafe.
The best part: It's all free.

Retired mason Donald Wentworth leads Sunday services at Pasco nursing home
Friday, June 17, 2011
Donald Wentworth spent 35 years as a mason before coasting into retirement. He figured he would do a lot of fishing and lounging around. Then an unexpected visit to church led to a new calling. As he thumbed through the Bible, reading the words and listening to the preacher's message at Hicks Road Baptist Church, Wentworth felt moved to do more.
"From that moment on, I believed that God had a mission for me," said Wentworth, 70, of Port Richey. "I learned that God wanted me to be a messenger and a witness for him."

Kyrja has pink and purple streaked hair, a brightly colored house and an equally colorful name she picked for herself — from a Viking word meaning "choosers of the slain." "I chose the name Kyrja because I choose to be who I am. I take full responsibility for my own choices," said Kyrja (pronounced KEE-ruh), who prefers just the first name, no last name, thank you very much.
Kyrja spent years operating a steel drum roller and dump trucks and digging ditches. When she was laid off from the construction industry in 2008, she saw the opportunity to put her pent-up creativity on paper.
