Passenger killed in Brandon crash, deputies note 'high rate of speed'

BRANDON — A driver slammed into a palm tree after failing to negotiate a curve Wednesday, and his passenger died in the crash, deputies reported.

Andrew John Wallace, 25, was driving his Nissan 350Z at a "high rate of speed" on the Brandon Parkway just after midnight, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. In the passenger seat was Ivan Ordonez, 23.

The Nissan rolled over a raised concrete median at a curve in the road near Pauls Drive, and the passenger door struck the tree.

Ordonez, of Valrico, died at the scene, deputies reported. Wallace, also of Valrico, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Charges and toxicology results are pending, the Sheriff's Office said.
