Passenger killed in Brandon crash, deputies note 'high rate of speed'

BRANDON — A driver slammed into a palm tree after failing to negotiate a curve Wednesday, and his passenger died in the crash, deputies reported.

Andrew John Wallace, 25, was driving his Nissan 350Z at a "high rate of speed" on the Brandon Parkway just after midnight, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. In the passenger seat was Ivan Ordonez, 23.

The Nissan rolled over a raised concrete median at a curve in the road near Pauls Drive, and the passenger door struck the tree.

Ordonez, of Valrico, died at the scene, deputies reported. Wallace, also of Valrico, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Charges and toxicology results are pending, the Sheriff's Office said.

  5. Unlicensed contractor accused of faking death triggers policy change at Pinellas construction licensing board

    Local Government

The unlicensed contractor accused of faking his death to avoid angry homeowners has triggered an immediate change in policy at the Pinellas County Construction Licensing Board.

Last year Glenn and Judith Holland said they paid a contractor thousands of dollars to renovate their future retirement home in Seminole. But when they tried to move in on Dec. 14, they said the home was in shambles and uninhabitable. They sent a text message to contractor Marc Anthony Perez at 12:36 p.m. looking for answers. Fourteen minutes later, they got back this text: "This is Marc's daughter, dad passed away on the 7th of December in a car accident. Sorry." Turns out Perez was still alive. Now the Hollands are suing him in Pinellas-Pasco circuit court. [LARA CERRI | Times]
