REDINGTON BEACH — A Pinellas sheriff's deputy helped 30 guests at a beach motel escape a fire early Saturday morning.

Deputy Dennis Garvey, 33, was on patrol in Redington Beach just before 2 a.m. Saturday when he noticed a kitchen fire at Parmigiano Ristorante Italiano at 17001 Gulf Blvd. in Redington Beach. The restaurant shares a building with the Malibu Resort Motel.

After calling for assistance, Garvey and Cpl. Brant Bickford evacuated about 30 guests from the motel, according to sheriff's officials.

No injuries were reported and fire officials say they do not think the fire was suspicious in nature.

The building suffered extensive damage, sheriff's officials said.
