Forest Lakes science teacher honored
Janet Acerra, a science teacher at Forest Lakes Elementary, has been selected as a state science finalist for the 2014 Presidential Awards of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching Program. The award recognizes her contributions as a science teacher in Florida. Acerra will be recognized at a ceremony next month by the Florida Association of Teachers. A national selection committee will choose individuals for recognition by the White House and a $10,000 prize.
Journalism program to kick off annual exhibit
The Journeys in Journalism program, a partnership of the Pinellas County school system and the Tampa Bay Times, will hold its annual exhibit starting Sept. 12 at Studio@620, 620 First Ave. S in St. Petersburg. The exhibit runs through Oct. 2 and will showcase the work of 100 journalism students at Melrose Elementary, John Hopkins Middle and Lakewood High schools. It begins with an opening night celebration from 5-8 p.m. that will feature student-led tours, performances by the Hopkins Jazz Band and World Drummers, and cake celebrating the program's 10th anniversary.

Lunches include seasonal fruit and milk.
Monday: Chicken teriyaki rice bowl with roll, Giorgio cheezy bread with marinara, chef salad with turkey ham, chicken Caesar wrap, stir-fry vegetables, romaine or tossed salad.
Tuesday: Rib-b-que sandwich, mini chicken tacos, farmer's salad, Italian sub sandwich, baked beans, veggie dippers.
Wednesday: Chicken nuggets, spaghetti with meatballs, yogurt and fruit parfait, ham and cheese croissant, sweet potato waffles fries, salad.
Thursday: Breakfast for lunch, mini calzones with marinara, chicken Caesar salad, turkey and cheese sandwich, roasted potatoes, veggie dippers.
Friday: Cheeseburger sliders, pizza, tuna chef salad, chicken Caesar salad, school favorite sandwich, spinach, collard greens, salad.
