St. Pete Referendum: Preliminary results show ‘Yes’ on Vinoy and baseball complex questions, charter amendment

ST. PETERSBURG — Voters approved two referendum questions and one charter amendment in Tuesday’s election.

Voters gave the green light with about 63 percent approval to allow the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club to move forward with an upgrade that includes building a parking garage with 270 spots and eight tennis courts on top on a piece of waterfront land.

Results showed an overwhelming nod — about 84 percent — for the city to negotiate a lease of up to 20 years with the St. Petersburg Baseball Commission for the city-owned Walter Fuller Park baseball complex. In return, the commission will invest more than $300,000 to maintain and improve the fields. The commission has operated the complex since 2009. At least six of eight City Council members must finalize the agreement.

Finally, City Council members will be able to express opinions on the mayor’s creation of new management positions, decisions about employees who work for the council and appointments to city boards. They could previously do so only on some senior management positions. The amendment passed by about 56 percent.
