Palin's visit to Clearwater is a hot ticket

By Mike Brassfield, Times Staff Writer
In print: Friday, October 3, 2008

At the GOP’s Pinellas headquarters Thursday, Narda Enander, left, and Carolyn Daliendo give tickets to Holly Andrade and her family for Sarah Palin’s rally at Coachman Park. Andrade, who has a child with autism, believes Palin would be an advocate for families with special-needs children.

CLEARWATER — Sarah Palin is coming. The surprise announcement hit Tampa Bay's political scene like an A-bomb on Thursday.

At first, Republican organizers expected a relatively light turnout for the vice presidential candidate's speech because of its time and location — 8 a.m. Monday at Coachman Park in downtown Clearwater. The gates open at 6 a.m.

"It's first thing in the morning on Monday and it's near the beach — not the most accessible location," said Pinellas GOP chairman Tony DiMatteo. "We were shooting for maybe 5,000 people. You never know."

Then a steady stream of Palin fans kept showing up at local GOP offices Thursday, scrambling for tickets to the rally.

"Look at this," said a disbelieving DiMatteo, gesturing to a constant flow of people outside the Pinellas GOP headquarters in the rear of an obscure office park near St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport. "This isn't exactly the easiest place to find."

DiMatteo said the free tickets would continue to be available today and Saturday at Republican Party offices throughout the bay area. Pinellas County offices received most of the local tickets, but some are also available in Pasco, Hernando, Hillsborough and Manatee counties.

The GOP's three Pinellas offices handed out 4,000 tickets Thursday, party officials said. People picking them up weren't being asked if they were Republicans. But they were asked to sign up for a mailing list.

Palin is making a two-day swing through Florida next week. After Clearwater, she heads to Fort Myers. On Tuesday, she'll make stops in Jacksonville and Pensacola.

Her local appearance comes on the heels of Barack Obama speaking at a rally in Dunedin last week.

"It's good for Pinellas County and Tampa Bay to get all the access to the candidates that we've been receiving," said Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard. "Obviously, Florida is an important state, and the I-4 corridor is an important region in the state. It pretty much decides who's going to win."

Coachman Park, 301 Drew St., holds roughly 12,000 people and is the site of the annual Clearwater Jazz Holiday, set for Oct. 16-19 this year.

The McCain campaign picked the venue partly because preparations are already under way at the park for the jazz festival, DiMatteo said. The park is also preparing for other concerts Oct. 10-11.

Organizers are lining up musical acts, other speakers and a salute to local veterans before Palin takes the stage at 9 a.m.

Cameras are allowed, but people going to the rally are advised to pack light because they'll go through a security checkpoint.

The city of Clearwater is making plans to set up a remote parking lot, possibly at Jack Russell Stadium, with shuttle service to Coachman Park.

State Sen. Mike Fasano, a Republican whose district includes North Pinellas and parts of Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties, will be at Monday's event and said McCain-Palin supporters throughout his district are clamoring for tickets.

"She offers a breath of fresh air," Fasano said. "She's not a Washington bureaucrat."

Fasano said the rally is a political necessity for the McCain campaign, which sees the region as critical to winning Florida in November.

Hours before Thursday's vice-presidential debate, local GOP offices were abuzz with Palin fans eager to see her in the flesh.

Tracie White, a lifelong Clearwater resident and mother of five, brought her homeschooled 9-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, with her to get tickets. The girl had her picture taken with George W. Bush when she was a baby but was too young to remember it.

"She'll remember this one," her mother said.

I just finished watching Pallin's speech in Clearwater on Fox. I can't tell you how excited I am to see this intellegent, vibrant woman run for V.P. This is such an incredible historical moment. I thought her speech was great! I want to see more!
by Carol Oct 6, 2008 12:13 PM
Pass. I hate to miss more winks from Sarah, but I'll leave this *opportunity* for those who voted George W. into office... TWICE.
by Former Demorcrat Oct 5, 2008 10:53 AM
I want to say that I have been a demorcrat all my life but this year I am voting for Mcain/Palin.It's not race or anything like that. This country is on the fast track on being destoyed and I feel that we need experince rather than a good talker.
by M Oct 5, 2008 10:06 AM
It is sad to see so much discrimination against this women - I guess if she were a democrat or Hillary it would be different - shame on us !
by sunnydaz Oct 4, 2008 1:32 PM
Not like McCain to take a backseat to anyone-so why is he focusing all our attention on Palin? After all, we're not electing HER- it's him who'll run the country. He didn't even mention the MI pull-out to her! What doesn't he want us looking close at?
by Sunny Oct 4, 2008 1:32 PM
Your loved one is on the operating table. You need someone to save him/her.Do you call a specialist who knows what to do? Or someone you find "cute," & "folksy"? Well, our country is on the table, McBush put it there, and Obama has to operate.THINK
by Dan Oct 4, 2008 1:31 PM
by golly you betcha. just what we need a parent talking down to us not at VP. you betcha. Get real, we need leadership and the republicans can't do it.
by Lee Oct 4, 2008 9:08 AM
Emme--Just let me get this straight. By your line of reasoning, it is best to have STUPID people governing our country? Somehow I'm betting you voted for George W, didn't you Emme? Have we said "thank you" enough for that one yet?
by Lee Oct 4, 2008 9:08 AM
Vote McCain/Palin?Then your house isn't in foreclosure;you haven't lost your job yet;you don't love someone with a disability;in other words- it isn't that bad YET for you. This is not a popularity contest; not a photo op.You need the WILL to change.
by Joe Oct 4, 2008 9:08 AM
It's OK. finally and hopefully we will have a normal person in Washington.
by Jocephus Oct 4, 2008 9:08 AM
Hey Emme, do you think Sarah will secretly ship weapons of mass destruction to the enemies of America like our pal Ronnie? He was such a fine example of Republican leadership!
by art Oct 4, 2008 9:07 AM
Hands down, Sarah Palin would make a far better co-host than Joe Biden to replace Vanna White on "Wheel of Fortune".
by marlene Oct 3, 2008 6:33 PM
THANKS, BUT NO THANKS.
by Emme Oct 3, 2008 6:29 PM
Intellectuals do not make great presidents.High IQs do not mean great leadership qualities.See Jimmy Carter and Woodrow Wilson. Both were pathetic.Gimme folksy ah shuck Ronnie Reagan types any day.Love you Sarah!
by mike Oct 3, 2008 6:28 PM
James. Palin did "well" in the debate because everyone thought she would continue to be the buffoon. She wasn't, but I just cannot stand another executive of the country who cannot pronounce "nuclear" and who responds to questions with "doggone it."
by No McSame/Failin' !! Oct 3, 2008 6:18 PM
Geez people, what debate where you watching? I thought SP was horrible! Who wants another uninformed republican near the WH for another four years? I don't! They're responsible for this mess!
by sunny Oct 3, 2008 6:15 PM
"She's not a Washington bureaucrat"-she's also not competent.I'm sad that with the serious problems we have, esp here in FL, that this is the best we can do? Is she the best, the brightest, the most we can hope for to turn things around? THINK
by Lee Oct 3, 2008 6:14 PM
McCain argued vs.funding for schools of excellence for autistics;has no provision for autistics in healthcare plan;would allow discrimination based upon "pre-existing" to continue;does not support full funding of IDEA;voted against funds for CARD
by Lee Oct 3, 2008 6:14 PM
STOP EXPLOITING SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN FOR POLITICAL GAIN!Palin has DISMAL record with disabilities. She has never done a thing for autistics--even though her nephew is autistic.MCain is NOT supported by advocates for disabled.Vote facts-not photo ops
by John Oct 3, 2008 6:07 PM
James...you are confused. Longoria hit it out of the park last night. Not Palin, she played DODGEball. Shes clueless.
by pat Oct 3, 2008 6:06 PM
Sarah smoked that lying Biden in the Debate. We have our tickets and will be there. John & Sarah are the only people that will keep us FROM a welfare state and socialism. Take a look at the map - all the democratic states are going bankrupt!
by James Oct 3, 2008 10:50 AM
Sarah Palin knocked out Joe Biden tonight. What a wonderful debate for her. A total grand slam. She knocked it out of the park. Even Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe said she did well tonight. That means she slaughtered him in non-spin talk

New Port Richey is just a few short miles north, Mme. Vice Pres. HOCKEY MOMMA...NOT Obama!!!!
by Robert Oct 3, 2008 10:50 AM
Enough is enough, We the people do NOT want another 4yrs of McSame and the trickle down tactic that only serves as a method as lining up the pockets of the haves by taking it from the have nots.
by Homeless Oct 3, 2008 10:50 AM
Maybe she'll come over to Greenwood to say howdy.
by Tracie Oct 3, 2008 10:49 AM
:D How neat, we made the paper. Last night Elizabeth watched the debates and is very excited about going to the rally on Monday. She said that both candidates did well, and Sarah Palin was smart and funny.
by Dave Oct 3, 2008 10:49 AM
Ha, between the Scientologists and the Palin supporters, maybe we should just nuke Clearwater on Monday, just to make sure we've gotten rid of all the stupid.
by Jim Oct 3, 2008 10:49 AM
CA, I could not agree more. Heaven for bid we have someone with intellect run this country. Quite frankly I don't want someone running this country with a lack of knowledge and poor understanding of issues. Palin only regurgitates facts no substance.
by Obama empty suit Oct 3, 2008 10:49 AM
It was great to see Palin knock Biden around in the debate. It was clear to everyone that Joe does not want to be the empty suits VP! Palin represents the future, NOT the past!
by Ray Oct 3, 2008 10:49 AM
On Monday morning the Courtney Campbell Causeway from Tampa unofficially becomes a bridge to nowhere.
by Jake Oct 3, 2008 10:49 AM
She looked like she was reading standard answers off her cards. She deflected questions in stead of answering them. Poor showing, I was disappointed.
by Sully Oct 3, 2008 10:49 AM
Joe Sixpack is worth 1.2 million dollars. Just like every other Joe Sixpack out there!
by phil Oct 3, 2008 10:49 AM
Well Holly, considering she cut the budget in Alaska for special education programs INCLUDING programs for those with Autism and Downs Syndrome, that gives you a pretty good idea where her priorities lie. Forget Caribou Barbie- Obama in '08!
by Ryan Oct 3, 2008 10:49 AM
Why isn't this story in the NEWSPAPER? When Obama came, it was on the front page. Typical.
