John Sweeney files for re-election to Hernando County School Board

BROOKSVILLE — Hernando County School Board member John Sweeney on Wednesday filed to run for a third term as the District 1 representative.

Sweeney, 51, has held the seat since 2006. Previously, he taught and coached in the school system for 10 years, and he has been involved in the community through the YMCA and the West Hernando Little League. He is married to Vivian Sweeney, an assistant principal at Fox Chapel Middle School.

Sweeney said he is energized by new superintendent Lori Romano and feels all the pieces are now in place to move the district forward. He said he is focused on improving the graduation rate and bringing in an aviation academy.

Earlier this week, Timber Pines resident Mark Johnson filed for the District 1 seat.

District 1 covers much of Spring Hill. School Board races are nonpartisan.
