TAMPA — Andrew H. Warren, a Democrat running for Hillsborough County State Attorney, jumped into the race last month to a lot of skepticism about his chances against long-time incumbent Mark Ober.

On Tuesday, Warren's campaign announced he has raised nearly $52,000 since the beginning of January from more than 150 contributors. He still has a way to go before catching up to his opponent. Ober, who began accepting campaign donations in October, has raised just over $120,000 so far.

"We need a State Attorney who's dedicated to justice and will fight every day for the rights of victims and families," Warren said in an emailed statement. "I told our supporters that I needed their help to continue my service. They answered because they know my record, and they know how hard I'll fight for Hillsborough."

Warren, a former federal fraud prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice, is the first Democrat to challenge Ober since 2000 when he first ran for the State Attorney's Office. Ober, who has been in office for 15 years, has not faced a Republican challenger since 2008.
