Iorio in a Super Bowl whirl

TAMPA — Even as she considers a run for the U.S. Senate, Mayor Pam Iorio is swept up in Super Bowl mania this week with a calendar packed with appearances, news conferences and parties.

She'll sit down today for an interview with the Today show and swing by a dinner for NFL team owners hosted by the Glazer family. On Saturday, she'll do a turn with ESPN's jock chefs.

But what is Iorio, 49, most excited about?

"I'm really looking forward to meeting Bruce Springsteen," she said. "I've been a Bruce Springsteen fan since high school."

Springsteen and the E Street Band are the Super Bowl's halftime entertainment.

Iorio is using her multiple media appearances to plug the city.

At a news conference Monday that drew journalists from Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and NBC, Iorio touted the city's dropping crime rate, downtown development, the streetcar, museums and Ybor City.

Throughout the week, Iorio said she plans to promote those aspects of the city, as well as environmental efforts that have earned the city a gold certification from the Florida Green Building Coalition.

On Friday, Iorio is tentatively scheduled to meet with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon.

"I am going to use that opportunity to talk to about light rail because they just opened a light rail system," she said.

And then, of course, there's Sunday, when Iorio will go to the Super Bowl. She took advantage of the opportunity to buy two tickets for $1,000 each.

"It will probably be the only time in my life that my husband and I do attend a Super Bowl game," she said.
