Norm Roche beats Pinellas County Commissioner Calvin Harris

Longtime Pinellas County Commissioner Calvin Harris, a Democrat, lost his seat to perennial challenger Norm Roche, a Republican, Tuesday night.

Roche, 48, of Clearwater, who lost past bids for the commission as a Democrat, ran this year as a Republican and appeared to benefit from the same Republican wave that sent two Pinellas Democratic state legislators to defeat Tuesday.

Harris, 69, also of Clearwater, has served on the County Commission since 1997. The last incumbent Pinellas commissioner to lose an election was John Chesnut Jr. in 1992.
