Race for Brooksville council seat draws second candidate

BROOKSVILLE — Darren McKethan is the second person to prefile paperwork seeking election to Seat 2 on the Brooksville City Council.

McKethan and former council member Joe Bernardini are both seeking the seat, which will be vacated by Frankie Burnett, who has filed to run for County Commission.

The late Alfred A. McKethan, the powerful Brooksville banker and businessman, was Darren McKethan's great-uncle. A salesman of heavy equipment, Brooksville-born Darren McKethan said he is running because he believes he has something to contribute to his hometown. He has served on the city's parks and recreation advisory committee and the charter review board.

McKethan, 49, said he isn't running based on an interest in any one issue. He did say that he sees both sides of the ongoing red-light camera issue that has divided both city residents and the council. While he doesn't like to see the cameras used as a money-raising tool or how they are now used, he can see some safety aspects in the program.

A graduate of Troy University in Alabama with a bachelor's degree in general business, he returned to Brooksville after school. He is married and has two adult children, a daughter and a son.
