Saint Leo student joins Brooksville District 2 commission race

BROOKSVILLE — County Commissioner Wayne Dukes has a challenger for his District 2 commission seat.

Charles Joseph McBrearty, 26, prequalified to run for the seat late last week. He is a member of the Libertarian Party of Florida. A native of New Jersey who came to Florida eight years ago, he is a student at Saint Leo University studying history and hoping to be a writer or a teacher.

He said he has had some issues with Dukes' decisions as a commissioner and he wanted to offer voters a choice.

McBrearty was especially irked by the commission's recent approval to seek testing of unmanned drones. He also said he does not believe the commission has done enough to attract business to the community and that, as an unemployed student, there should be more opportunity for him in the county.

McBrearty said that he would not favor cutting county services but would prefer that they were funded through user fees rather than taxes.

The District 2 commission seat will be on the ballot in fall 2014. Dukes announced earlier he will seek re-election.
