PolitiFact and Scripps launch partnerships in Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Ohio

PolitiFact's Truth-O-Meter is coming to Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Ohio.

PolitiFact and the E.W. Scripps Co. are partnering to provide local fact-checking in four key 2016 battleground states.

Scripps television affiliates in Ohio (WEWS in Cleveland and WCPO in Cincinnati), Colorado (KMGH in Denver), Arizona (KNXV in Phoenix and KGUN in Tucson) and Nevada (KTNV in Las Vegas) will create PolitiFact websites to hold state and local politicians accountable.

The agreement means that PolitiFact now has partnerships in 14 states ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

"The 2016 presidential race is already showing what a public service fact-checking can provide, and we're thrilled that Scripps is willing to add more heft to the movement," PolitiFact editor Angie Drobnic Holan said. "Scripps and their affiliates share our passion for sorting out the truth in politics and holding politicians accountable for the claims and promises they make. We can't wait to get started."

The agreement also will allow PolitiFact's independent reports to be shared among Scripps' network of 33 television stations in 24 markets.

"Covering the political landscape with factual, relevant information is a core commitment we make in each of our local markets," said Sean McLaughlin, vice president of news for Scripps. "PolitiFact relentlessly pursues the truth and provides added context when it comes to verifying claims made by politicians. In partnership with PolitiFact, we will deliver the authentic and transparent reporting our audiences want and deserve."

PolitiFact was launched as a public service by journalists at the Tampa Bay Times in 2007 to fact-check the presidential candidates. Eight years and more than 11,000 fact-checks later, PolitiFact has become a worldwide model for independent, objective fact-checking — expanding from the campaign trail to the halls of Congress, to state legislatures and governors' mansions. PolitiFact won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for its fact-checking of the 2008 presidential election.
