What people are saying about Paul Ryan as VP pick

"This is a strong pick. Governor Romney is serious about confronting the long-term challenges facing America, and Paul Ryan will help him solve the difficult issues that must be addressed for future generations."

George W. Bush, former president of the United States

"Paul Ryan is a reformer and a proven leader who will be a great partner to Governor Romney in his efforts to get our country, and our economy, back on track."

John Boehner, R-Ohio, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

"This courageous choice is the type of leadership American voters deserve. And, I believe it will ensure a victory for the Romney-Ryan ticket this November."

Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida

"Paul is a good friend and one of the smartest guys I served with in Congress. He has the courage of his convictions, which is what our nation needs."

Bobby Jindal, governor of Louisiana

"My friend and fellow Wisconsinite Paul Ryan will serve America admirably as the next Vice President of the United States. … Across the country, Americans are hurting, but America's Comeback Team will offer us a new direction and a brighter future. I congratulate Governor Romney on his excellent decision. This is a great day for Wisconsin and for America."

Reince Priebus, chair of the Republican National Committee

"Paul Ryan is a bold and inspiring choice. … He will help to restore America at home so that we can lead again because he understands that America is an exceptional and indispensable nation on the world stage."

Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State

"Romney VP pick bad for seniors. Signals an end to Medicare as we know it. My commitment to Medicare never stronger."

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., on Facebook

"Congressman Ryan has been called a serious person, but he, like Mitt Romney has seriously flawed ideas for our economy that have only failed us in the past."

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chair of the Democratic National Committee

"Mitt Romney has crystalized the contrast of this election. Ryan is the architect of Romney's extreme budget plan which would end Medicare as we know it, increasing the health care costs for Florida's seniors by thousands every year."

Rod Smith, chairman of the Florida Democratic Party

"As a member of Congress, Ryan rubber-stamped the reckless Bush economic policies that exploded our deficit and crashed our economy. Now the Romney-Ryan ticket would take us back by repeating the same, catastrophic mistakes."

Jim Messina, campaign manager for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign

"Selecting someone like Paul Ryan, who is so popular with tea party activists, proves that Mitt Romney is committed to addressing the economic issues that have been troubling our nation for the last four years."

Amy Kremer, chair of the Tea Party Express

"The Romney-Ryan team is uniquely positioned to make the tough choices necessary to confront our fiscal challenges and get results."

Chris Christie, New Jersey governor

"Paul Ryan may end up a heartbeat away from the presidency, but he'll be light years from civil liberties. Paired with (Mitt) Romney's already-abysmal record on civil liberties, Ryan's positions only take this ticket further from the vision of our founding fathers."

Anthony D. Romero, ACLU executive director

"I have known and worked with Paul Ryan since being elected to the Congress and was outraged time and again when his ideas to move our nation forward were killed by a liberal Senate. Now our party can give him the right platform and a Senate that will no longer be flawed and unworkable."

U.S. Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fort Myers, candidate for U.S. Senate

"Congressman Ryan has a deep, abiding respect for all human life, including unborn children and their mothers, the disabled, and the elderly. … With the election of a Romney-Ryan ticket, America, and her children, will be in good hands."

Carol Tobias, National Right to Life president

"Governor Romney and Representative Ryan are the strongest team to return America to prosperity and to defend our interests abroad. Paul Ryan has proven that he is fully prepared to address our nation's economic challenges, which have only worsened over the last four years under the Obama-Biden Administration."

U.S. Sen. John McCain, Republican presidential nominee in 2008
