Pinellas political hangout Tucson's Southwest Grill closes doors

Tucson's Southwest Grill, a popular meeting spot in mid Pinellas County for political parties and other groups, is closing.

Visitors such as Patriots' Ink club member Richard Canary, expecting a place for a regular Monday night meeting, instead found a sign inside the door stating the restaurant was closed but would reopen today.

But majority owner Les Rubin, the developer who recently took back control of the 14,000-square-foot location, said the restaurant will be closed for good and will be redeveloped. Rubin said Tucson's, 13563 Icot Blvd., which is off Ulmerton Road, was losing too much money to remain open.

Rubin opened Tucson's in 1990 in the Icot Center, taking a venue left by a restaurant that went out of business.

The county's Democratic and Republican parties and other organizations started meeting in its banquet rooms monthly. But the poor economy hurt business recently, as did construction along Ulmerton Road, Rubin said.

He decided to close this weekend and notify workers.

Rubin said he intends to reopen a business at the location. "We're actively working on a lot of options," he said.
