Several protests scheduled as the GOP convention kicks off

TAMPA — Several protests and rallies are scheduled Tuesday as the Republican National Convention convenes for the first time this week.

About half a dozen events have been permitted by the City of Tampa, but more non-permitted marches will likely continue throughout the week.

Most of the scheduled events will take place Tuesday afternoon and through the evening.

Among the groups gathering: Doctors for America, a group of medical students and physicians who support national health care law; and the Westboro Baptist Church, a religious faction best known for picketing the funerals of veterans with anti-gay posters.

It was not clear what kind of turnout could be expected at these events or how the still-uncertain weather from Tropical Storm Isaac may impact the day.
