Garnering about 60 percent of the vote, former Brooksville City Council member and four-time mayor Joe Bernardini defeated incumbent council member Frankie Burnett in Tuesday's general election.

Bernardini, 64, previously served for 22 years on the council. A 40-year service technician for AT&T, he worked for two years for the city Police Department and has volunteered for 25 years on the sheriff's posse auxiliary and as a reserve deputy.

He ran hoping to continue the work he had started in previous terms, including service to constituents, working on the quality of life for city residents at an affordable cost and maintaining responsible growth that benefits everyone. Bernardini was also concerned about animosity between city and county government.

Bernardini was excited about the outcome. "That's great,'' he said, noting that he hoped his win was a reflection on his past experience and service.

Burnett, 61, has served 10 years on the council.
