Shuttered Hillsborough prison among four sold statewide

TALLAHASSEE — A shuttered women's state prison in Hillsborough County is among four approved Tuesday for sale.

The 135-acre site near Riverview of the Hillsborough Correctional Institution was cleared by Gov. Rick Scott and the three Cabinet members to be sold to its only bidder — the Tampa-based Eisenhower Property Group LLC.

The company, which offered more than $3.5 million for the site, owns several other large tracts of vacant and pasture land nearby, property records show. Background materials prepared for Tuesday's meeting say the company has no plans for now to build on the land.

The prison was closed in 2012 as part of a statewide consolidation plan to save money. It was most recently the faith- and character-based home to 299 women.

Besides the Hillsborough prison, the state approved the sale of three more in Broward, Hendry and Palm Beach counties. The state also sold off other land in Volusia and Miami-Dade counties. The Volusia parcel will be used to help start a motorsports program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The more than $27 million generated by the sales will go to a state fund used to purchase environmentally-sensitive lands.

  4. Bar review: Les Partners Lounge goes old-school in Clearwater

    Bars & Spirits

There are some local places that I'm shocked aren't more well known, and I think that's the result of a general aversion to stepping out of one's comfort zone. I make regular concerted efforts to step outside of mine, which often leads me to strange and rewarding drinking establishments.

Les Partners Lounge is an old-school, smoker-friendly cocktail lounge and live music venue tucked away in a nondescript shopping plaza in Island Estates.
  5. Local craft beer of the week: Plongeur a L'eponge, Saint Somewhere Brewing Co.

    Bars & Spirits

Tarpon Springs' Saint Somewhere Brewing Co. has a somewhat idiosyncratic approach to wild ale brewing, utilizing an open brewing approach involving uncovered fermenters in order to brew beer with local ambient microbes, reminiscent in some ways to the fermentation techniques used by rustic farmhouse breweries in Belgium …
