54-year-old bicyclist critically injured in Seminole crash

SEMINOLE — A 54-year-old bicyclist was critically injured late Sunday after colliding with a van, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office

Roger L. Hiers of Gibsonton was riding north on Park Street just south of Burning Tree Drive about 11:25 p.m., deputies said. He rode into the path of a van driven by 52-year-old John L. Collins of St. Petersburg, who was also northbound on Park Street, deputies said.

Hiers was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening head injuries, and investigators said alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.

The area where the crash happened was not well lit, deputies said.

Collins, who was not injured, did not show signs of impairment, deputies said.

The investigation is ongoing.
