ST. PETERSBURG — The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 2-month-old girl who drowned while taking a bath with her mother on Sunday. The baby's mother suffered a medical episode that left her unconscious, deputies said.

A relative found both, pulled 2-month-old Kavina Navanetharaj from the tub and attempted to revive her with CPR until paramedics arrived.

The infant was taken to St. Petersburg General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The mother, Sureka Sivalingam, 32, was treated and released from the hospital.

The Sheriff's Office has deemed the baby's death an accident.

The incident took place about 2:45 p.m. at the family home at 5884 Dunfries St. N in unincorporated Pinellas County.

The mother prepared a bath for her baby by filling a portable infant tub with water and placed Kavina in it. Then the mother climbed into the house's regular tub, which deputies said was empty.

About an hour later, a family member found the baby submerged in the infant tub and the mother unconscious in the bigger tub. The family member pulled the baby from the water, called 911 and performed CPR on the child.

The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:11 p.m.

The investigation is continuing.
