ST. PETERSBURG — A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition at All Children's Hospital after being struck by a car Monday.
Marcelo Lynch of St. Petersburg was with two other kids between ages 10 and 12 when the three tried to cross Fourth Street N at Seventh Avenue N about noon.
All three children made it to the center turn lane as a long line of cars moved southbound at about 35 mph, police said. But unlike the other children, Lynch never stopped.
One vehicle that was in the median lane managed to avoid hitting the boy.
But a 2006 Mitsubishi in the curb lane could not. The driver, 22-year-old Tierre Lushun Smith of St. Petersburg, told police she noticed the other car stop but did not see the children.
As she began to brake, she saw Lynch running into her lane. She veered to the right and continued to brake, but struck the boy with the left side of her vehicle.
The boy collided with the vehicle's hood and ended up on the pavement, authorities said.
No charges have been filed in the case.
