83-year-old man dies in Sun City Center crash

SUN CITY CENTER — Troopers have identified the drivers involved in a fatal crash Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 41 S at Universal Drive.

About 4:15 p.m., Julius Edson Houghtaling, 83, of Sun City Center was in a two-door 2004 Chevrolet stopped at a stop sign on westbound Universal Drive.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 1994 Ford pickup, driven by David Eugene St. John, 42, of Ruskin entered the intersection on U.S. 41 in the left lane. Troopers said Houghtaling proceeded from the stop sign across U.S. 41 into St. John's path.

St. John tried to slam on his brakes, leaving about 100 feet of skid marks, but the two collided, authorities said.

Troopers said Houghtaling died at the scene, and St. John was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

There was no alcohol involved, and both drivers were wearing seat belts, troopers said.
