Bicyclist struck and killed on State Road 52 in Bayonet Point

PORT RICHEY — A 48-year-old bicyclist died Thursday night after he was struck by a car while riding across State Road 52 in Bayonet Point, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said that shortly before 10:45 p.m., Richard Barry, of Hudson, biked across SR 52, heading southbound at the intersection with La Madera Boulevard.

Barry entered the path of Michelle Axelson, 51, who was driving eastbound on SR 52 in a 2014 Chevy Cruze, authorities said, when they collided. Axelson’s vehicle had one passenger, 28-year-old Ericka Susalla.

Barry was taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point by authorities, where he died of his injuries.

Axelson and Susalla were not injured.

Authorities are unsure if alcohol was related to the incident, they said, but Axelson was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and driving on a suspended or revoked license.
