A 64-year-old man died when he suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel of a semitrailer truck Wednesday, causing him to drive it off Interstate 4, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident took place in Hillsborough County at about 5:21 p.m. on I-4 near mile marker 19.

FHP said Ernest James, of Port St. Lucie, was driving the unloaded semitrailer west on I-4 when he suffered a medical episode, troopers said.

He lost control of the vehicle, which left the interstate, entered the shoulder and struck a fence, the FHP said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
