NEW PORT RICHEY — A 49-year-old motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and fatally injured while riding along a winding road Wednesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident took place at about 3:20 p.m. David Ruffner was riding his 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle north on Rowan Road through a "serpentine roadway curve," the FHP said.

When Ruffner neared Sharpsburg Boulevard, troopers said he entered the northern part of the curve, but struck the outside shoulder of the road and was thrown from his motorcycle.

Ruffner, of Port Richey, was transported by authorities to the Medical Center of Trinity. Troopers said he later died from crash injuries.

The FHP report said Ruffner was wearing a helmet and that alcohol was not a factor.
