CLEARWATER — A 29-year-old man died in Pinellas County Jail on Sunday morning, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Stephen Gregory James was found unresponsive in his sleeping area about 7:10 a.m, deputies said.

Medical staff responded and administered CPR to the St. Petersburg man, the agency reported, but were unsuccessful. They then called paramedics, but James was pronounced dead at 7:55 a.m.

The cause of his death was unclear, deputies said. They said there were no signs of injury, and the death did not follow any confrontation or use of force. The medical examiner’s office in Largo said it will perform an autopsy Monday.

Deputies arrested James on Jan. 18 on charges of possession of PVP, an ingredient in the synthetic drugs known as bath salts and flakka, a violation of his probation after other drug charges. He had an arraignment scheduled for Feb. 9.
