Alcohol believed involved in Clearwater drowning

CLEARWATER — Alcohol is believed to be involved in Tuesday's drowning of a 35-year-old man, authorities said.

Joseph J. Craig, of Chicago, had been drinking and decided to go for a swim about 4:39 p.m. near the Palm Pavilion. After other beachgoers discovered him unresponsive in the water, they brought him to shore and started CPR.

Medics took over and Craig was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and that they think alcohol was a factor.
