An Apollo Beach man was killed Sunday morning when he struck another car while making a lane change on Interstate 4 and left the roadway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say Timothy Craig Spiker, 31, was driving a 2005 GMC Sierra eastbound in the inside lane near the I-75 exit on around 7:30 a.m. when he when he attempted to switch to the center lane.

He failed to yield the right-of-way and struck the right side of a 2012 Ford Expedition driven by 60-year-old John Simon Jr., of Tampa, the FHP said.

The impact caused Spiker's SUV to rotate and leave the roadway before crashing into a concrete pipe and overturning, the FHP said.

Spiker was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he died from his injuries, the FHP said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, the FHP said.
