ST. PETERSBURG - Firefighters rescued a woman Tuesday night after she attempted suicide by driving her car into Lake Maggiore, officials said.

The 31-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, crashed a silver convertible Mustang into the lake at about 9:30 p.m. near 32nd Ave. S., said Lt. Joel Granata of St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue.

"When we got there there was a bystander in the water holding her head above water," Granata said.

Firefighter Cedrick Harrington pulled the woman out of the water, Granata said.

"They got her out and the car just kept going," he said.

Paramedics also treated the woman for self-inflicted wounds, Granata said, and the woman was taken to Edward White Hospital under the Baker Act.

A wrecking service was called to retrieve the car.
