ODESSA — A man illegally crossing the eastbound lane of State Road 54 on foot near the Suncoast Parkway early Friday morning was struck and critically injured by a suspected drunken driver, authorities said.

Dallas Jaamal Young, 21, of Land O'Lakes was taken to Bayfront Medical Center. A hospital spokesperson confirmed he was in critical condition at 10: 30 a.m.

Maurice John Brosnan, 73, of Port Richey, is charged with driving under the influence, DUI-property damage, DUI-serious injuries, refusal to submit to testing and careless driving.

Young was walking north across SR-54 around 1:15 a.m. when he was struck by Brosnan's 2006 Ford pickup truck, which then hit a utility pole, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Brosnan was not injured.

Initial reports from the FHP indicated that Young had died, but investigators were unclear at mid-morning whether than was the case.
