FHP seeking Jeep Cherokee that injured motorcyclist and fled

ST. PETERSBURG — The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a maroon or red Jeep Cherokee that pulled into the path of a motorcyclist outside Derby Lane on Sunday night, injuring the rider.

It was one of two motorcycle accidents that left both riders in critical condition this weekend in Pinellas County.

Sunday's crash took place around 8:29 p.m., according to the FHP. Motorcyclist William Whitecomb, 27, was headed east in the inside lane of Gandy Boulevard when a Jeep Cherokee leaving the greyhound track pulled into its path, the FHP said.

Whitecomb, of Brandon, tried to swerve out of the way but couldn't, the FHP said. His 2002 Harley-Davidson ended up striking the Jeep's rear wheel. He was wearing his helmet but suffered a broken right leg and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center.

The Jeep's driver fled the scene.

The crash is still under investigation. Any witnesses or anyone with information about the driver is asked to call (813) 631-4020.

An earlier crash took place about 2:38 p.m. Saturday along Roosevelt Boulevard in Largo, the FHP said.

The motorcyclist, Kevin Minshew, was headed west near Bay Vista Drive when he lost control of his 2004 Suzuki, according to the FHP.

The 27-year-old Largo man drove off the north side of the road, then was flung from his bike and struck a wooden sign, the FHP said.

Minshew was wearing his helmet and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was reported in critical condition on Monday. The investigation into that accident is also continuing.
