NEW TAMPA — A Pebble Creek woman was killed and her teenage son seriously injured in a three-car crash in Thonotosassa on Thursday.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Sandra La Sala, 44, was the passenger in a 2001 Lexus being driven by her 16-year-old son, Jonathan Carrillo, when the accident occurred about 5:30 p.m.
Jonathan was headed south on Jefferson Street when he approached a stop sign at the U.S. 301 and tried to make a left turn, reports state. He pulled out in front of a truck headed west on U.S. 301 and T-boned the side of the truck, a 1997 Ford.
That collision sent the truck into the front end of a Kia sport utility vehicle that had been facing east on U.S. 301, waiting to turn onto Jefferson Street.
La Sala died at the scene; Carrillo was taken to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries. Neither the driver of the truck, Randall Ray Dallman, 52, of Plant City, nor the occupants of the Kia SUV, Tanya K. Swift, 44, and Sandra D. West, 43, both of Thonotosassa, were injured in the crash.
At the La Sala's home Friday afternoon, neighbors consoled La Sala's husband, Chris, who said the family was devastated. He said Jonathan will be hospitalized for "a long time" but "he's going to make it."
