TAMPA — A 17-year-old died Monday after he apparently crashed his car off Fletcher Avenue between N Rome Avenue and N Boulevard.

Deputies responded to the crash near 1301 W Fletcher Ave., at 9:40 a.m., after a caller reported seeing taillights in a woods off Fletcher Avenue, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Cody Allen Miley of 7111 N Coarsey Drive was discovered inside the 2004 Mustang, which left the roadway and struck a tree on the driver's side.

Miley, who detectives say was wearing his seat belt, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He was a 2008 graduate of Chamberlain High School, Hillsborough schools spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said. The yearbook shows he was a member of the art club there.

His death came eight days before his 18th birthday.

Reached at home, his family declined to comment.

Detectives were investigating the cause of the crash.
