BROOKSVILLE — A 51-year-old homeless man died after being struck on his bicycle Tuesday night by a driver who police say left the scene.

The vehicle plowed into David Williams about 8:30 p.m. while Williams was riding north on Broad Street between Saxon Avenue and Mondon Hill Road, just east of downtown, according to Brooksville Police.

A short time later, a passing motorist saw the bicycle lying on the side of the road and called authorities, police said. Williams was taken to Brooksville Regional Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Williams' mother and brother, who both live near Kissimmee, were notified of the accident.

At the time he was hit, Williams was wearing a black shirt, black jacket, blue jeans, black shoes and red cap. He was riding a bike that was not equipped with lights but had amber-colored pedal reflectors and a rear-facing red reflector, which was mounted just below the seat. Williams was apparently riding with the flow of the traffic, police said.

"Obviously, the driver panicked and left the scene," Police Chief George Turner said. "But the best thing for them would be to give us a call."

The Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact Sgt. Duke Maeder at (352) 540-3800.
