Bicyclist, 71, in critical condition after colliding with SUV in Largo

LARGO — A bicyclist was hospitalized in critical condition after colliding with an SUV on Longwood Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers identified the cyclist as 71-year-old John Angus Gladwin of Largo. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center.

Troopers said Gladwin was northbound on Longwood Drive near Bryan Dairy Road in the travel lane when a 2011 Toyota SUV driven by Robert L. Towner, 49, of Seminole, tried to pass him.

Gladwin and the SUV sideswiped each other as Gladwin tried to turn left, according to troopers. Gladwin, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown off the bicycle and struck his head on the pavement.

The investigation is ongoing.
